Have you experienced psychosis? If you are aged 18 or over, you are invited to take part in an online survey exploring perspectives on the relationship between therapists and people with psychosis. The survey takes about 25 minutes.

Why this research matters

The relationship between therapist and client can shape how therapy is experienced, yet therapeutic relationships in psychosis remain under-researched. Your perspective can help researchers better understand this important area.

Who can take part?

You may be eligible if you are aged 18 or over and currently experience, or have previously experienced, psychosis. You do not need a formal diagnosis; brief questions at the start of the survey will confirm eligibility.

What does taking part involve?

Taking part involves completing an online survey, which is expected to take approximately 25 minutes. Participation is voluntary.

  1. Eligibility: Answer a few brief questions. If you are not eligible, no further information will be requested.
  2. Consent: If eligible, answer questions and provide an electronic signature to confirm that you understand the study, what it involves and how your data will be used.
  3. About you: Provide information such as your age group, gender and ethnicity. This will help describe who took part, show how broadly the findings may apply and support an even spread of participants across groups. A computer program will randomly assign you to a study condition.
  4. Therapy descriptions: Read short descriptions of an interaction between a therapist and a person with psychosis, imagining yourself as the client.
  5. Your response: Answer brief questions about what you read, how it made you feel and what you thought of the therapist.
  6. Finishing: Download your responses and consent form for your records. You may also provide contact details if you would like to receive the study findings.

About the study

Psychosis and the Therapeutic Relationship: A Vignette Study forms part of the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsych) at the University of Oxford. The Chief Investigator is Dr Lorna Hogg at the Oxford Institute of Clinical Psychology Training and Research. The Principal Investigator is Miss Holly Dale, who designed the study and will submit the findings as part of her doctoral thesis. An academic journal publication is planned after the study is complete.
